Johnny Based
Johnny Based is New York City born gothic alt artist andproducer redefining the boundaries of Black expression in
alternative music. Blending elements of gothic rock, punk rock
and hip-hop, and more, his sound is both raw and cinematic,
driven by themes of artistic freedom, identity, romance and
rebellion against cultural confinement. Emerging from the
underground scene with a rapidly growing fanbase, Johnny has
gained attention for his viral performances, visually striking street
content and unapologetic aesthetic.
His breakout single One Step (Closer) has been the spark behind
his growing audience, contributing to a new wave of interest in
gothic rock through a distinctly modern lens. His work challenges
the perception of who belongs in alternative spaces, placing
Black creatives at the forefront of a genre historically seen as
exclusive. His sophomore album, GothStar, expands on this
vision, merging sounds, fashion and performance into a world
that is as confrontational as it is captivating. With momentum
building and a clear artistic direction, Johnny Based is not just
